FEMENINE, Paulo Ribeiro

Prior to consolidating his career as a choreographer, Lisbon-born Paulo Ribeiro enjoyed a successful career as a professional dancer with various French and Belgian companies. His first experience as a professional choreographer was in Paris in 1984, with Stridanse, a company he co-founded. He later took part in various competitions in the French capital, and in 1984 was received the Humour Award, whilst in 1995 he was the runner up in the Contemporary Dance category of the international choreography competition 'Prix Volinine'.

On his return to Portugal in 1988, he began working with the Lisbon Dance Company and the Gulbenkian Ballet, creating Taquicardia (winner of Sete newspaper's Revelation Award in 1988) and Ad vitam. With his dance solo Modo de utilização, which he choreographed and performed, he represented Portugal at the Europália 91 Festival in Brussels.

From 1991 his career as a choreographer acquired an international scope, with the creation of works for leading companies including Nederlands Dans Theater II (Encantados de servilo and Waiting for Volúpia), Nederlands Dans Theater III (New age); Grand Théâtre de Genève (Une histoire de passion); Centre Chorégraphique de Nevers-Borgoña (Le cygne renversé). In addition for the Ballet Gulbenkian he created Inquilinos, Cuatro árias de ópera (in collaboration with Clara Andermatt, João Fiadeiro and Vera Mantero), Comédia Off-1.

During this period Paulo Ribeiro received the 1994 Paulo Ribeiro received the Acarte/Maria Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão Award for his work entitled Dançar Cabo Verde, a commission for Lisbon94 – European Capital of Culture, and a joint project with Clara Andermatt.

In 1995, he founded the Paulo Ribeiro Company, subsidised by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture. He has created the following choreographies for this company including Sábado 2, Rumor de deuses, Azul esmeralda, Memorias de Pedra - Tempo caído, Orock, Ao vivo, Comédia Off-2, Tristes europeus - Jouissez sans entraves, Sililcone não, Memórias de um sábado com rumores de azul, Malgré nous, nous étions là and Masculine.

Working with his own company has enabled Ribeiro the choreographer to delve deeper into the development of a more personalised language. In 1996, the work Rumor de deuses won the Circulação Nacional Awards given by the Instituto Português do Bailado e da Dança e Circulação Internacional and the Courtrai Culture Centre, both of which were included in the Mudanças 96 competition.

Paulo Ribeiro has also received several other major prizes including an Author’s Award at the fifth edition of the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine Saint-Denis (France); the New Choreography Award given by the Bonnie Bird Fund-Laban Centre in the UK; the Collective Performance Award from ADAMI (France); and the Bordalo Award given by the Casa da Imprensa in 2001. In addition to his work as a choreographer, between 1998 and 2003 Paulo Ribeiro was also the General Programming manager for the Teatro Viriato/CRAE, which received the 1999 Almada Award from the Portuguese Institute of Performing Arts for his contribution to the field of dance.

Ribeiro was the director of the Gulbenkian Ballet between 2003 and 2005. During this time he created the works White and Organic beat, Organic spirit, Organic cage, for which he was awarded the Casa da Imprensa Bordalo Award in 2004.

He restaged the work White feeling – originally created for the Gulbenkian Ballet for the Ballet de Lorraine, which premiered in Nancy (France), in October 2006.

In September 2006 he once again took up the position of general and artistic director at the Teatro Viriato.
