The piece

NEGRO, Daniel Abreu

Negro talks to us of sleeping skin, of rest, of an intimate landscape, of the need to be honest…

Negro is a choreography created for four dancers and focuses on the body as the sole instrument for channelling all types of sensations. It consists of various scenes based on a reflection of everyday action and/or improvisation.

It is the development of non-coded dance material that is the result of observation, and also features a more technical dance register. This piece falls within the dual framework of contemporary dance and improvisation. The prior experiences of the performers brought to the forefront of their memory combined with the quality of the movements that form part of the stage direction. Instead of reflecting on the outer being – the skin, or on what lies beneath, this piece speaks of what the skin sees, what makes it fearful and what transforms it, what makes it wakeful and sleepy.

Any reference to dance implies a reference to the living body, exposed to all types of sensations. Being part of the idea behind a project requires immense control over our thoughts and experiences. In the creative process, the floodgates are open and ideas come rushing in, whirling around a common experience, which forms the basis of our tale.

Negro talks to us of sleeping skin, of rest, of an intimate landscape, of the need to be honest…
